A recent study has categorized users of large language model (LLM) tools into two distinct groups. One group approaches AI with skepticism, treating it as a powerful, albeit imperfect, tool that requires human oversight. Conversely, the other group tends to outsource their critical thinking to AI, viewing it as an infallible source of information.

This study, titled “Thinking—Fast, Slow, and Artificial: How AI is Reshaping Human Reasoning and the Rise of Cognitive Surrender,” was conducted by researchers at the University of Pennsylvania. It aims to understand the psychological framework surrounding the second group, which frequently engages in “cognitive surrender” by accepting AI's authoritative answers without question. The research examines the conditions under which users are willing to relinquish their critical thinking abilities to AI, particularly in situations involving time constraints and external rewards.

Understanding Cognitive Surrender

The researchers build on existing theories of decision-making, distinguishing between two types: the intuitive, fast processing (System 1) and the analytical, slow reasoning (System 2). They argue that the advent of AI introduces a third category, termed “artificial cognition,” where decisions are influenced by automated, data-driven reasoning from algorithms rather than human cognition.

Historically, humans have engaged in cognitive offloading, using tools like calculators and GPS to delegate specific tasks while applying their reasoning to evaluate outcomes. However, AI systems have prompted a new form of cognitive surrender, wherein users exhibit minimal engagement and accept AI outputs blindly, especially when the information is presented confidently and fluently.

Experimental Findings

To investigate the extent of cognitive surrender, the researchers conducted multiple studies utilizing Cognitive Reflection Tests (CRT). These tests are designed to reveal intuitive errors in participants, allowing for a clearer comparison between intuitive (System 1) and deliberative (System 2) thought processes.

In their experiments, participants had optional access to a modified LLM chatbot that provided incorrect answers about half the time. The researchers hypothesized that frequent consultations with the chatbot would lead to an overriding of intuitive and deliberative reasoning, thereby diminishing overall cognitive performance and highlighting the risks associated with cognitive surrender.

In one experiment, participants who consulted the modified AI accepted its reasoning 93 percent of the time when the AI was correct. Even when the AI provided erroneous answers, users still accepted its reasoning 80 percent of the time, indicating that the presence of AI significantly affected their internal decision-making process.

Moreover, the AI-using group outperformed a control group relying solely on human reasoning when the AI provided accurate answers. However, they performed worse than the control group when the AI was inaccurate. Notably, participants using AI reported a 11.7 percent higher confidence in their answers, despite the AI being wrong half the time.

Another study demonstrated that introducing incentives and immediate feedback improved participants' ability to challenge incorrect AI responses by 19 percentage points compared to a baseline. Conversely, imposing a time limit reduced the tendency to verify AI responses by 12 percentage points, suggesting that time pressure diminishes users’ capacity for critical evaluation.

Implications of Cognitive Surrender

Across a sample of 1,372 participants and over 9,500 trials, the researchers found that subjects accepted faulty AI reasoning 73.2 percent of the time and only overruled it 19.7 percent of the time. This indicates a tendency to integrate AI-generated outputs into decision-making with little skepticism. The researchers noted that fluent and confident outputs from AI are often treated as authoritative, which lowers the threshold for scrutiny and reduces the cognitive signals that would typically prompt deliberation.

The study also revealed variability in how different individuals responded to AI. Those with higher fluid intelligence were less likely to rely on AI for assistance and more likely to question faulty outputs. In contrast, individuals with greater trust in AI were more easily misled by incorrect responses.

While the researchers acknowledge that cognitive surrender can have downsides, they argue that it is not inherently irrational. They suggest that in certain contexts, such as probabilistic assessments or data analysis, a reliable AI could outperform human reasoning. They conclude that as reliance on AI increases, performance will correlate with the quality of the AI, emphasizing the dual nature of cognitive surrender as both a promising and risky venture in the realm of human reasoning.
