Gen Z uses AI all the time, so why are they starting to hate it?

More than half of Gen Zers in the US regularly engage with generative AI, making them expected advocates of this technology. However, recent findings suggest a shift in sentiment, with many expressing growing skepticism about its benefits.

A survey conducted by Gallup, in collaboration with the Walton Family Foundation and GSV Ventures, polled over 1,500 individuals aged 14 to 29. The results reveal a notable decline in enthusiasm for AI among Gen Z. The excitement for AI has dwindled by 14 percentage points compared to last year, while feelings of hopefulness have decreased by nine points. In stark contrast, anger towards AI has risen by nine points. Currently, only 18% of Gen Z respondents feel hopeful about AI's potential, and just 22% find it exciting. Conversely, a significant 42% report feelings of anxiety, and 31% express outright anger.

Declining Optimism Among Daily Users

Interestingly, even those who use AI on a daily basis—typically more favorable towards the technology—are showing signs of decreased optimism. Among daily users, excitement and hopefulness have dropped by 18 and 11 percentage points, respectively, indicating that increased usage does not necessarily correlate with greater confidence in AI.

Concerns Driving Discontent

One of the primary driving forces behind this discontent is Gen Z's perception of AI's impact on their cognitive abilities. A staggering 80% of respondents believe that using AI tools could hinder their future learning capabilities. Additionally, skepticism about AI's influence on creativity and critical thinking is prevalent, with 38% and 42% of participants, respectively, asserting that AI is likely to do more harm than good in these areas.

The Workplace Perspective

The views on AI are not much more positive in the workplace either. Among employed Gen Z individuals, nearly half (48%) believe that the risks associated with AI outweigh its benefits. Only 15% perceive it as a net positive for their work lives. Trust in AI-assisted tasks is also low, with 69% of respondents expressing a preference for work completed without AI intervention.

A Pragmatic Approach to AI

Despite their reservations, Gen Z is not completely dismissing AI. Close to half of high school students recognize that AI skills will be essential for their future careers. This indicates a pragmatic approach; Gen Z is aware of the necessity of AI in the modern workplace but is approaching it with caution and critical awareness.

In conclusion, while Gen Z is among the most frequent users of AI technology, their enthusiasm is tempered by significant concerns about its implications for learning, creativity, and job security. As they navigate the challenges of integrating AI into their lives and careers, their skepticism may ultimately drive a more balanced and thoughtful engagement with technology.
